Waikiki Zoo and Aquarium

I feel somewhat sad when I see animals locked down in a surrounding much smaller than their natural habitat. Nevertheless, I hate to admit, I love seeing them in person, so there’s a mixed emotion every time I go to an “animal sanctuary”.

In Waikiki, we checked out the Zoo and Aquarium. The zoo was much larger than expected. I’ve never been in a zoo that had so many tropical birds, then again it’s a given since we’re in Hawaii. They featured animals from all over the world: rhinos, crocodiles, prosimians, and lions. (click here for list of animals.)

We also caught a special couple making love for all to see.

The Aquarium was much smaller than expected, but still covered many different types of fish, corals, plant life, and sea lions. We had the privilege of seeing some of them while snorkeling in front of our hostel.

When it comes to food, I love seafood. I was most impressed by the giant clams and the colors the glowed with. I wonder how they would taste?

Overall, if you want a relaxing stroll off the strip, the Waikiki Zoo is the place to go. For as shorter stroll, check out the Aquarium just up the way.
