If you want endless amounts of live music from electro to rap, local favorites, international artists, and Grammy winners, you MUST go to Austin’s South By Southwest (SXSW). Click here for the 2012 lineup.
As you walk the streets of Austin, every venue has a featured artist and/or band. 6th street is the main drag where they block off the streets so people can freely wander. It’s basically bar after bar packed with fans and travelers from all over the world. You can tell who was there for business as they wore specialty badges, other music fiends had $200+ badges that supposedly got them into the concerts they wanted, and those with wristbands could get into venues, but weren’t guaranteed entry because of capacity regulations. A lot of controversy has come about as this festival has gotten so well known. There are a lot of venues that don’t charge cover or require badges/wristbands. Those places are great for people like us that aren’t there for a specific artist or band. If we could get into a show great! If not, move on to the next place.
Luckily, my friend, Michelle had the hookup to the Doritos Jacked MAXIM Private Party. Private meaning you couldn’t even get in with a SXSW badge or wristband. The featured artists were Ghostland Observatory, Mystical, and Snoop Dogg. Bottomless drinks and food were also offered throughout the venue.
To our surprise it wasn’t what we expected. We expected suits, ties, body fitting dresses and high heels. It was actually a relaxed party with mostly everyone dressed very casual.
Ghostland Observatory had amazing energy! People were so nice letting me get to the front because I was a bit shorter than everyone. Haha yes.. it does come in handy at times! It was great seeing them from the first row as they blasted the audience with a psychedelic light show.
This was the highlight of my SXSW experience. Although, I left after Ghostland Observatory to meet up with my cousins, it was still an amazing time. Michelle, you’re amazing for getting us in and I thank you for everything!
Other than that, the week was filled with delicious foods, amazing music, family and friends, and endless laughter. I can easily see myself repeatedly going back. This is by far one of my favorite festivals I’ve ever experienced.
